(Photo courtesy Ken Middlebrook/History San Jose) History San Jose CEO Bill Schroh Jr. said he was walking through the park a few years ago when he remarked to Ken Middlebrook, History San Jose’s curator of collections, that a train depot would fit perfectly between Dashaway Stables and the rail collection of a Southern Pacific locomotive, Orchard Supply Hardware boxcar and a caboose. Fortunately, Middlebrook had one in mind. Since 2017, he had been part of a grass-roots effort to save the Coyote depot from demolition. It was owned by Union Pacific — which merged with Southern Pacific in the 1990s — and was set to be torn down because of plans for the high-speed rail line through the area. “The next day I contacted Peter Kerney of the Union Pacific Railroad and asked him how I could get the Coyote Depot to History Park,” Schroh said. “After a two-year negotiation, they sold the depot to us for $1.” A Santa Clara County grant to the California Trolley and Railroad Corp., a History San Jose affiliate, covered the costs to move the depot, which is now owned by the city of San Jose. It was the first building moved to History Park, which opened in 1977, since the Andrew P. Hill House in 1998. Waterloo is an extremely structured school. You start interning in your first year, and for most students there, it sets the tone for the rest of your career. I knew I would be working on web software… and all 6 of my internships had a web software focus, so I had a pretty good idea of the type of career that would lead to. I only know of a handful of cases in my program where the people went on to do something entirely different.   What was your first job out of University? My first job was technically a software development position with NVIDIA in Santa Clara. I did my last 3 internships there. They offered me a full-time gig when I was done school and I signed. I came back to Toronto for graduation and to spend the summer, before moving back to the Valley. I took what I thought was a temp position with a small boutique consulting firm called imason inc. that I had worked with in the past and I loved working there so much that I decided to stay. The Valley is great on so many levels, but leaving your hometown is never easy. Yeah, I know what you mean. How did the idea for Candid come about? My partner Dominic Gignac and I started FiveAces last summer to allow businesses to better leverage outside expertise (the crowd) in strategic ways that benefited both sides. We had both worked at Workopolis, so we both had a lot of experience with Recruitment/HR and our first approach to the problem was ElasticForce, a marketplace that would make it easier to collaborate across companies, a few hours at a time. Utilities are generally cheaper in Texas as well, roughly 20% less than in California. The city saw an influx of over 16,600 millennials last year — about 13.3% of the total population. This brought millennials to 40% of Santa Clara's total population, which has a median age of 35. Austin's tech scene is drawing movers to the Lone Star State, while the budding film industry in Georgia has attracted millennials to Sandy Springs, DeJohn said.In 2022, one in four millennials moved to a different city. Though many moved for work, others working remote positions relocated for a lower cost of living or a change of pace."Millennials are older now than they've ever been, so people are starting to settle down and have families," DeJohn said. Things didn’t turn out so well, however, as the suspects demanded money, and paid themselves by taking a computer loaded with bitcoin. Movers Ransom A type of scam that has been unfortunately growing is what’s known in some circles as a movers ransom. Basically speaking, a bogus moving company or independent movers will get all of a clients items loaded onto a truck. At this point, they may drive a short distance or even all the way to the destination. Then, the swindle begins. The scammers will typically start to demand additional compensation. If the compensation is not given, scammers will threaten to take things, break objects, or simply drive the truck away with everything inside. Since the victim is in a very weak position as all of their belongings are locked away in a truck, many of them will comply and pay extra money. In the Saratoga case, the Sheriff’s office said: “When [the] victims refuse to pay more than the agreed-upon rate, the three suspects decided to compensate themselves by forcibly taking the victims TV and Apple iMac computer”. The Hidden Treasure Trove Unbeknownst to the thieving group, the stolen computer apparently was loaded with a bitcoin wallet that held around $10,000 worth of the cryptocurrency. What’s interesting about this is that cases like this could end up setting an important precedent for the future. In most countries, if someone is caught stealing property, the degree of punishment given is often related to the value of goods stolen. Weston Miles Architects recently hired Mighty Tree Movers, also based in Morgan Hill, to move eight mature trees—some fruit bearing—from the footprint of an upcoming construction project on Depot Street, while keeping the plants alive and thriving. David Hamilton, owner of Mighty Tree Movers, and his crew moved the biggest of these trees on April 15. That morning, Hamilton used his massive hydraulic tree spade hooked up to a truck to move a 35-foot, 15-year-old London Plane tree. The crew and truck moved the tree about 50 feet—from its birthsite on the south side of the parking lot next to the Granary building to a spot closer to the sidewalk on Depot Street. The tree, and others moved by Hamilton in previous days, was standing in the way of the final phase in the development of the Granary District, explained Lesley Miles of Weston Miles Architects, owner of the project. Construction on that phase—a two-story, 2,750-square-foot commercial building west of the Union Pacific railroad tracks and just next to where the district’s signature grain silos stand—is likely to start this summer. Miles and Weston planted heritage fruit trees, Blenheim apricots and Italian plums—some of which occupy the district’s signature private orchard. Money was tight, so Caplan scoured the web for an affordable but reputable moving company. Over the years, Congress has done little to address moving scams, other than to hold an occasional hearing. Her search unearthed several moving companies. One was called America’s Best Movers. It had terrible reviews online. “I said to myself, ‘It’s a good thing I used Yelp. I’m not going to use these people,’ ” Caplan would later tell a criminal grand jury. Eventually, she found a company in San Jose called Encore Moving, which advertised that it had been in business for 10 years and had an A-plus rating with the Better Business Bureau. Caplan said she could find only one review of the company, and it wasn’t critical. She decided to ask for a quote. Little did Caplan know, Encore was lying. Encore was a new entity, established just that year as an alternate business name for ASAP Relocations, a notorious San Jose moving company that once had an F rating from the Better Business Bureau. Prosecutors would later surmise that ASAP’s owner, an Israeli national with a fondness for gambling and expensive cars, established the Encore name as a means of escaping ASAP’s poor reputation. In 2018-19, 56% of moves in California were families fleeing the state. In 2020-21, that figure jumped to nearly 60%. The state that was by far the biggest draw of California residents? It was Texas, the destination for more than 7,500 California families during the four years in the study, perhaps little surprise given that Silicon Valley’s tech giants like Oracle, Tesla and Hewlett Packard Enterprise picked up and moved their headquarters there too. California also continues to lose residents to Washington, Florida and Virginia while attracting consistently fewer movers arriving from those states. “Our cities have always competed with the suburbs to attract residents, but now they’re competing against every single other area in America,” said Matthew Kahn, an urban economics professor at USC and author of a recent book on the remote economy. “It’s San Francisco against Boise, Idaho, or Bozeman, Montana. In 2018-19, 56% of moves in California were families fleeing the state. In 2020-21, that figure jumped to nearly 60%. The state that was by far the biggest draw of California residents? Dave Whitcomb, who became the restaurant’s owner in 2006, made the rounds, greeting people in the elbow-to-elbow crowd, which included founding partner Don Durante (who went on to open Los Gatos’ Cin-Cin and Mountain View’s Cascal). The big missing presence, of course, was that of Birk McCandless, the founding partner who died in 2005. “I think Birk would have enjoyed this party,” Whitcomb said. For its anniversary, lead bartender Juan Campos devised a scrumptious cocktail called the 89er, which nicely connects the restaurant’s 1989 birthday and its new neighbors at nearby Levi’s Stadium. It’s got bourbon infused with applewood-smoked bacon, mixed with maple syrup and topped with maple foam. The hiring manager asked what name he preferred to be called. Tower didn’t care for the name Clarence so he asked to be called “Bob.” Today, this Santa Clara resident is still known to many as “Bob.” In his later years, Tower worked as a land surveyor and civil engineer. Because the descriptions he wrote while performing those jobs had to be precise, he was able to cultivate his writing abilities. Today Tower is an accomplished author of five books (and an visual artist with a portfolio of over 400 pieces of art). “I think there’s a need to accomplish something,” says Tower, explaining the motivation behind his writing and art. “I just like to get things done.” Back in 2002, Tower’s first book “Seventy Years in the Silicon Valley: An Anecdotal History” was published. In the book, Tower talks about Silicon Valley’s early history. “For example, I talk about the bonfires they used to have at pre-game rallies when Santa Clara University teams competed against other schools,” Tower says. “I talk about the orchards and open fields here prior to development.” Next, Tower wrote “The Toughest Chicano” about Super Bowl quarterback and former U.C. Berkeley coach Joe Kapp. The book hasn’t been published, but that didn’t stop Tower from moving on to write “The Adventures of Zack Gentry.” Published in 2012, the Western novel reflects Tower’s curiosity about time travel. “In one scene near the end of the book, the entire party of Buffalo Bill’s extravaganza is spread out at the beach near the Cliff House in San Francisco,” Tower says. “Here, Zack rediscovers his long lost lover.” Tower’s fourth book is a picture book called “The Life of a Teddy Bear Family,” published in 2013. Here, Tower recognizes his late wife Nadine and members of her family, such as Uncle Earl, the artist and butterfly collector, and Uncle Donald, the wood carver. Featured family members are portrayed as fuzzy teddy bears. The illustrations are a compilation of about 40 years of Tower’s art work. “The book is mostly about my wife’s family; she grew up in the Ozarks in Missouri,” Tower says. “I knew those facts about her family from years of living with her. It was 2012 and the middle-aged mother of two was looking for someone to move her and her kids from California to Arizona. Money was tight, so Caplan scoured the web for a reputable moving company. Her search unearthed several options—one was called America's Best Movers, but it had terrible reviews. "I said to myself, 'It's a good thing I used Yelp,'" Caplan would later tell a criminal grand jury.Eventually, she found a company in San Jose called Encore Moving, which advertised that it had been in business for 10 years and had an A-plus rating with the Better Business Bureau. She decided to ask for a quote.Caplan didn't know that Encore was lying. The company was a new entity, established that year as an alternate business name for ASAP Relocations, a San Jose moving company that once had an F rating from the Better Business Bureau. Prosecutors would later surmise that ASAP's owner, an Israeli national with a fondness for gambling and expensive cars, established the company's new name to shed ASAP's poor reputation.And Encore wasn't ASAP's only alternate business name; it also went by America's Best Movers.'They Really Don't Want the Job'Over the next year, about 35 million Americans will relocate, and many are at risk of getting scammed. The problem is more acute for those who move across state lines. States regulate local moves, but the federal government oversees interstate transportation—and devotes few resources to regulation and enforcement. Every year, the feds receive thousands of complaints about interstate moves, some involving so-called hostage goods, when a mover packs up a person's belongings and demands more money before delivery.The moving industry has long attracted fraudsters, but experts say scamming became more pronounced in the late 1990s, after Congress shuttered the Interstate Commerce Commission. Then, in 2000, oversight of the interstate moving industry fell under the purview of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, or FMCSA, whose central mission is to reduce truck and bus crashes, injuries and fatalities. It's been an awkward fit. "They're underfunded and they really don't want the job," says Jeff Walker, president of MovingScam.com, a website where consumers can get information about rogue moving companies. For fiscal year 2017, FMCSA has requested $794.2 million in funding. Of that, only $1.73 million is budgeted for interstate moving enforcement activities for the entire country.Congress has done little to address moving scams, other than to hold an occasional hearing. Loosened restrictions now allow residential showings with no more than two visitors in a house, protected with masks and gloves and observing social distancing rules. And movers, like their clients, are deciding whether it’s worth the risk to do a sweaty business in the cloud of a deadly virus. Movers are being asked to follow safety and sanitization recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Rachel Peretz, spokeswoman for the American Moving and Storage Association. Taken together, these two trends mean that population loss due to domestic migration has more than doubled since the beginning of the pandemic. Statewide, the share of movers that left California increased from 16.3% in 2016 to 20.3% at the end of September. The exit rate of movers has increased in 52 of 58 California counties. “Every single county has seen fewer people moving in from out of state since the start of the pandemic, and declines were especially steep in San Francisco County (-53%), Santa Clara County (-52%), and San Mateo County (-48%),” the nonpartisan, Berkeley-centered research group stated in its Dec. 15 report. Declines in California population were the first since 2016, the report said. The city Department of Transportation is accepting bids to develop a transit project spanning the three miles between the airport and Diridon Station. San Jose has already received 23 ideas from companies discussing possible solutions for covering this gap, ranging from autonomous vehicles and Hyperloop to monorails and magnetic levitation vehicles. The city will eventually select one firm to lay the groundwork for the project, including the transit technology, business model that involves securing private funding and designing a transit path that avoids street-level crossings. Only Illinois ranked worse off than the Golden State when it came to moving vans heading for the border during the pandemic, according to the report, which focused on data from the moving company United Van Lines. In 2018-19, 56% of moves in California were families fleeing the state. In 2020-21, that figure jumped to nearly 60%. The state that was by far the biggest draw of California residents? (Courtesy Glydways) For more than two decades, San Jose leaders have been stymied on how to connect a 3½-mile gap between San Jose Mineta International Airport and Diridon Station. They may have finally found the answer: a “Star Trek”-like army of robotic shuttles ferrying passengers between the two travel hubs — with a price tag of up to $500 million. Despite skepticism from transit enthusiasts and local bus unions, the San Jose City Council initially approved the project that could get underway by 2028 and comes as the city’s airport and Diridon Station are experiencing increased demand with no efficient public transit option to link them. It currently takes two public transit stops or an Uber to make the journey. In its unanimous approval Tuesday, the council voted to explore working with a local startup called Glydways, whose driverless shuttles would carry up to four passengers on a designated driveway at a maximum speed of 31 miles per hour. Since the shuttle would run at a continuous speed, officials from Glydways said the journey could take around eight minutes — as opposed to the roughly half-hour bus ride. The 200 or so shuttles would stop at Terminal B, and plans are in the works to potentially include Terminal A and nearby parking. Funding for the project would be a public-private model, with the city taking on some of the costs, while an investment group called Plenary would front another portion. Plenary’s umbrella company is Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, or CDPQ, one of Canada’s largest pension funds. The fare cost is currently unknown, city officials said, but will be collected by investors in exchange for partially funding the project. Officials at the Valley Transportation Authority’s union accused the council of banking on a technology that isn’t commercially available yet. “This project seems very unrealistic,” said Amalgamated Transit Union Local 265’s member Raj Singh, “and may not be feasible.” City officials, however, argue that the driverless shuttles are the most cost-effective option for cementing San Jose’s place as a technological leader in Silicon Valley. “I have plenty of questions about the economic case for the project, but that’s why we study things,” wrote Mayor Matt Mahan in a text message after the council’s vote. “What I reject is the notion that we shouldn’t explore new solutions because they might disrupt the existing transit system. Our job is to find the solutions that work best for the community.” The project comes as the region is set for a $9.3 billion expansion of its BART trains that would connect downtown San Jose with Santa Clara, though the proposal has seen major budget increases over the years. In 2014, she excused herself from a council meeting, saying, “I have a tumor in my spine. I met with my surgeon today, and he insisted on scheduling the surgery tomorrow. He said it’s a wonder I’m still walking around. It’s that serious. But it’s treatable.” Pat Mahan died Oct. 28 with her family around her. The immediate cause was heart failure, according to her sister Regina “Jeannie” Mahan Visiger. Pat was a Santa Clara native who attended local schools and graduated from San José State with a teaching certificate in 1974. After a few years in the classroom, she decided on a career change and enrolled in Santa Clara University law school, graduating in 1980. She practiced law locally and continued to practice until the day she died. “She just kept thinking forward,” said Jeannie. The week she died, Pat was still restoring her historic home — it had been owned by her grandmother — and was planning a trip to New Orleans for her husband, John Boyles’, birthday. First elected to the city council in 1994, Pat followed in the footsteps of her father, John Mahan, who served on the city council and as mayor for a total of 11 years in the 1970s and 1980s. Pat was elected mayor in 2002 and 2006 — the City’s second female mayor — and then returned as a council member in 2010 and again in 2016, serving until health problems forced her to step down in early 2020. The crowd gave her a standing ovation as she left the Council Chambers after announcing her departure. “I knew Patty since we were on the Historic and Landmarks Commission,” said former council member John McLemore. “That’s 30 political years. We were political opponents twice, but we always had respect for each other.
