You'll want to start early, gather the right materials, label all your boxes, and pack by room. Movers in Santa Cruz often witness the same slip-ups over and over—like wrapping fragile items in newspaper or packing boxes too heavy to handle. By following these fundamental steps, you can ensure your move goes off without a hitch. So what makes moving in Santa Cruz unique? The charming narrow streets, quaint old homes with tight staircases, and a combination of apartment buildings and hillside residences present their own set of challenges. Local movers have figured out clever tricks to tackle all these quirks. Their suggestions aren’t complex, yet they can truly transform your moving experience. Let’s explore ten of these practical tips. 1. Get a Jump Start on Packing Most folks underestimate how long packing takes. Even a cozy two-bedroom home packs a bigger punch than you might think, and the process often takes double or even triple the time you expect. Begin with items you use infrequently—think seasonal clothes, books, and decor—at least three weeks before your moving date. This schedule gives you ample time to handle everyday essentials without stress. 2. Choose the Right Boxes Having a balanced selection of small, medium, and large boxes is key. Use small boxes for heavy items like books and canned goods. Medium boxes are perfect for kitchenware and clothing, while large boxes are ideal for lightweight, bulky items such as pillows and linens. Picking the correct size can prevent boxes from becoming too cumbersome or inefficient. 3. Opt for Packing Paper Over Newspaper While newspaper might be tempting, the ink can smudge your dishes and glassware. Opt for plain packing paper instead—it's affordable, clean, and more effective. Wrap each fragile piece individually and fill gaps with crumpled paper to keep things from shifting. For especially delicate items, a bit of bubble wrap adds valuable protection. 4. Label Boxes on the Sides When boxes are stacked, you’ll appreciate labels on the sides instead of the top. Use a bold marker to note the room and a brief description of contents. If a box contains fragile items, label them clearly and mark which side should face up. Spending an extra 30 seconds on this step saves a lot of headache later. 5. Stick to One Room at a Time Though it might be tempting to pack on a whim, focusing on one room at a time is far more effective. Mixing items from different rooms can cause confusion when you unpack. Completing one room before moving to the next speeds up unpacking and keeps everything organized. 6. Dismantle Furniture Ahead of Time Take apart beds, desks, and big shelves before the big day. Doing this the evening before you move saves time and effort. Place screws and small parts into a zip-lock bag and tape it to the respective furniture piece, so you won't have to hunt for them when reassembling.... --- ### Top 5 Home Remodelers in Santa Clara: Transform Your Space in 2026 - **URL:** https://moverssantaclara.com/top-5-home-remodelers-in-santa-clara-transform-your-space-in-2026/ - **Published:** 2026-03-04 - **Modified:** 2026-03-04 - **Author:** Movers Santa Clara **Categories:** Uncategorized When it comes to giving your home a facelift or embarking on a full renovation, Santa Clara hosts a variety of skilled professionals ready to bring your vision to life. These items are delicate, valuable, and often irreplaceable, so standard moving methods won't work. Professional specialty movers have the right equipment, knowledge, and insurance to handle these treasures safely from your old home to your new one.   Moving a grand piano or a priceless painting is nothing like moving a couch or bookshelf. These items need climate control, custom crating, and handlers who understand their specific needs. A piano weighs hundreds of pounds and has internal mechanisms that can break if tilted the wrong way. Fine art can be damaged by temperature changes, humidity, light, and physical contact. When you hire specialists for these moves, you're paying for expertise that protects your investment and gives you peace of mind.   Understanding What Counts as a Specialty Item Specialty items go beyond regular furniture. They include pianos, organs, and other musical instruments. Fine art such as paintings, sculptures, and antique pieces also fall into this group. Collectibles like rare books, vintage wine collections, and sports memorabilia need special handling too. Other examples include chandeliers, stained glass windows, pool tables, and large mirrors. Basically, if an item is fragile, heavy, valuable, or has moving needs that differ from standard furniture, it's a specialty item.   The reason these items need special treatment is simple: they're either expensive to replace, impossible to replace, or both. A family painting passed down through generations can't be bought again. A vintage piano that's worth thousands of dollars could lose value if damaged during a move. Even items that seem tough, like pool tables, can be ruined if moved incorrectly because their felt surface and precise level are easy to damage.   How Professional Movers Handle Specialty Items Professional specialty movers start with a careful assessment. They visit your home, examine each item, and create a plan for safe transport. They take measurements, note the item's condition, and figure out the best way to move it. For pianos, they might need to remove legs or pedals. For artwork, they build custom crates with padding and climate control features.   The moving team uses specialized equipment that you won't find on regular moving trucks. They have piano dollies with special wheels, custom wooden crates, padding materials, and climate-controlled vehicles. They also use straps, dollies, and lifting equipment designed for heavy or delicate items. These tools protect both the items and the movers' safety.   Insurance is another major part of specialty moving. Professional movers carry coverage that protects your items during transport. They can also help you understand what insurance you need and what it covers. This protection is crucial because moving specialty items always carries some risk, no matter how careful everyone is.   The Cost of Moving Specialty Items Moving specialty items costs more than regular moving services, and that's expected. The price depends on the item's size, weight, distance, and how much work... --- ### 5 Best Moving Companies In Santa Cruz - **URL:** https://moverssantaclara.com/5-best-moving-companies-in-santa-cruz/ - **Published:** 2026-02-05 - **Modified:** 2026-02-05 - **Author:** Movers Santa Clara **Categories:** Uncategorized Searching for Top-Rated Moving Companies In Santa Cruz? The key to saving money is simple: plan ahead, do the work yourself when possible, and avoid paying for services you don't actually need. Get free boxes from local stores, borrow a truck from a friend instead of hiring movers, pack your own belongings, and move during the middle of the month when demand is lower. By taking charge of the process and being smart about what you pay for, you can cut your moving expenses in half or more.   Most people overspend on moves because they underestimate how much they can handle themselves. Professional moving companies are convenient, but they come with a hefty price tag that includes labor, insurance, fuel surcharges, and fees for things like stairs or heavy items. Before you hire anyone, consider what you're truly paying for. If you're young and healthy with helpful friends or family, you might only need to rent a truck. Even if you do hire help, you can still pack everything yourself to save hundreds of dollars. The weeks before your move are when the real savings happen, not on moving day itself. Get Free Packing Supplies Start collecting boxes at least a month before you move. Grocery stores, liquor stores, and bookshops regularly break down perfectly good boxes that they'll happily give you for free. Check behind retail stores early in the morning when they're unpacking shipments. You can also ask neighbors who recently moved if they have boxes to spare. Buy packing tape in bulk from discount stores rather than paying premium prices at moving supply shops. Use towels, blankets, and clothing to wrap fragile items instead of buying bubble wrap. Newspapers work fine too, though they might leave ink marks on some items. Choose the Right Time to Move Timing matters more than most people realize. Moving companies charge premium rates at the end of the month when most leases expire and demand peaks. If you can schedule your move for the middle of the month, you'll pay less. Weekdays are cheaper than weekends. Summer costs more than winter in most places because families prefer to move when kids are out of school. If you have flexibility, moving in fall or winter can save you a significant amount. Some companies even offer discounts for moves that happen on short notice when they have gaps in their schedule. Reduce What You're Moving Purge before you pack. Every item you move costs money in boxes, truck space, time, and effort. Go through your belongings room by room and be ruthless about what you actually need. Sell furniture that won't fit in your new place rather than paying to move it. Donate clothes you haven't worn in a year. Throw away broken items you've been meaning to fix. Host a yard sale or list things online. The money you make can offset moving costs, and you'll have less to pack and unpack. Use What You Already Have Don't pay for supplies you... --- ### Best 5 Local SEO Agencies In San Jose - **URL:** https://moverssantaclara.com/best-5-local-seo-agencies-in-san-jose/ - **Published:** 2025-12-13 - **Modified:** 2026-01-06 - **Author:** Movers Santa Clara **Categories:** Uncategorized When we talk about the best Bay Area local SEO agencies, names like Salazar Digital (for home services and contractor businesses), My Project 100 (for data-driven creative work), and SEMbyotic (for high-impact B2B digital solutions) are on top of the list. You save time, lower stress, and protect your things. A DIY move may look cheaper at first, but the hidden strain, lost hours, and risk of damage often make the price gap smaller than you expect.   Many people start with a DIY plan because it seems simple. They picture a few boxes, one truck, and a short day of work. But the move often grows into long hours, heavy lifting, and repeated trips. On the other hand, trained movers handle this work every day. They carry boxes in steady steps, load a truck in the right order, and move furniture with skill. Still, both options can fit different needs. The right pick depends on your time, your budget, and how comfortable you feel doing hard physical work.   The True Cost of a DIY Move   A DIY move calls for more than a truck. It calls for packing supplies, gas, and maybe extra tools. You may buy straps, blankets, dollies, and tape. You may need help from friends who may or may not be free. You may need extra days off from work. These costs add up fast.   A common mistake is assuming the truck rental fee is the full cost. But gas for a loaded truck burns fast. You might need to buy more tape or more boxes. You might drop something and break it. If someone gets hurt, the cost grows even more. And if the move takes longer than planned, you may pay late fees for the truck.   DIY moves also demand time. Packing alone can take days. Lifting heavy items can drain your energy long before the move is done. If you are moving a long distance or have stairs, the job gets even harder.   Why People Choose Pros?   Hiring moving services Santa Clara brings a long list of clear benefits. First, pros bring tools and skill. They load a truck so items stay safe during the trip. They move large items without scraping walls or floors. They know how to plan a route so the move stays on track.   Second, pros handle tasks fast. A job that takes you two days may take them a few hours. This helps if you have a strict move-out date or a tight schedule.   Third, pros lower risk. Your things stay safer in trained hands. Your body stays safer too. Many people hurt their back, knees, or hands during DIY moves. Hiring pros helps avoid that.   Fourth, pros offer support if something goes wrong. They carry insurance. If they break an item, you may get it repaired or replaced. With a DIY move, you carry that burden alone.   Is the Price Worth It?   The price of moving services Santa Clara changes based on how far you move, how many... --- ### Santa Clara Moving Services: How to Get an Accurate Quote and Avoid Hidden Fees - **URL:** https://moverssantaclara.com/santa-clara-moving-services-how-to-get-an-accurate-quote-and-avoid-hidden-fees/ - **Published:** 2025-10-10 - **Modified:** 2025-10-10 - **Author:** Movers Santa Clara **Categories:** Uncategorized Getting an accurate quote for Santa Clara moving services starts with clear communication and careful review. The best way to avoid hidden fees is to ask detailed questions, provide honest information about your move, and get everything in writing. A reliable moving company will explain all possible costs upfront, including packing, fuel, stairs, and long carries. By comparing written estimates and checking for extra charges, you can protect yourself from surprise costs on moving day.   Moving in Santa Clara can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re relocating across town or to another city, knowing how to get an accurate quote can save you time, money, and frustration. Many people make the mistake of accepting the first price they hear, only to face hidden fees later. The good news is that with a few smart steps, you can make sure your quote reflects the real cost of your move. This guide will show you how to do that—simply and clearly.   Start with a Detailed Inventory The first step to getting an accurate quote is giving the moving company a full list of what you plan to move. Movers base their estimates on weight, size, and distance. If you forget to list items or underestimate how much you have, your final bill may be higher than expected.   Walk through your home and make a list of everything that needs to go. Include furniture, boxes, appliances, and special items like pianos or artwork. The more precise your list, the more accurate your quote will be.   Some Santa Clara moving services offer virtual or in-home estimates. These are better than phone quotes because the movers can see what they’ll be handling. If possible, schedule an in-person visit so they can assess your items directly.   Ask About All Possible Fees Hidden fees are what make moving costs jump. Common extra charges include:   Stairs or long carries: Some movers charge more if they have to carry items a long distance or up multiple flights of stairs. Packing materials: Boxes, tape, and wrapping can add up quickly. Fuel or travel time: Ask if there’s a fuel surcharge or minimum travel fee. Large or heavy items: Items like safes, pool tables, or treadmills often cost extra to move. Storage: If your new place isn’t ready yet, you might need short-term storage, which can add to your cost.   Ask your mover to explain each possible fee before you sign anything. A trustworthy company will be open about these details.   Get a Written, Binding Estimate There are three main types of moving estimates:   Non-binding estimate: The price can change based on the actual weight or time. Binding estimate: The price is fixed. You pay the agreed amount even if the move takes longer or weighs more. Binding not-to-exceed estimate: If the move costs less than expected, you pay the lower price.   For most people, a binding or binding not-to-exceed estimate is best. It gives you a... --- ### Movers in Santa Cruz: Local vs. Long-Distance – What’s Best for You? - **URL:** https://moverssantaclara.com/movers-in-santa-cruz-local-vs-long-distance-whats-best-for-you/ - **Published:** 2025-09-12 - **Modified:** 2025-09-12 - **Author:** Movers Santa Clara **Categories:** Uncategorized Whether you are changing apartments across town or packing up your home for a new state, the process takes time, energy, and planning. For residents of Santa Cruz, selecting the right movers can make all the difference between a smooth move and a stressful one. That’s why the question often comes up: should you hire movers in Santa Cruz for local moves, long-distance moves, or both?   The quick answer is simple: use local movers in Santa Cruz if you are staying within the county or nearby cities. Choose long-distance movers if you are moving hundreds of miles or across state lines. Local movers are familiar with the area and can efficiently handle short moves. Long-distance movers have the staff, trucks, and licenses to move you safely across states. The right choice depends on where you are going and what type of move you are planning.   Learn the differences between local and long-distance movers in Santa Cruz, the benefits of each, and tips to help you decide which is best for your situation. By the end, you will have a clear idea of which service fits your needs and how to prepare for your move.   What Are Local Movers in Santa Cruz? Local movers are companies that focus on short-distance moves, usually within 50 to 100 miles of Santa Cruz. They are best for people moving between neighborhoods, towns, or nearby cities. These movers charge by the hour and often send a small crew with one or two trucks.   Local movers in Santa Cruz have one big advantage: they know the area. Narrow streets, steep driveways, and busy traffic are common in Santa Cruz, and local teams are used to handling these challenges. They can also work on tight timelines, making same-day or next-day moves possible.   Another benefit is cost. Local moves are usually cheaper than long-distance ones because they take less time and use fewer resources. If you are moving a one-bedroom apartment across town, a local mover is almost always the best choice.   What Are Long-Distance Movers in Santa Cruz? Long-distance movers handle moves that cross state lines or go beyond a certain mileage, usually 100 miles or more. These moves require more planning, larger trucks, and teams trained in cross-country transport.   If you are leaving Santa Cruz for Los Angeles, Portland, or another state, you will need long-distance movers. They are licensed to operate across state borders and often have special insurance to cover your belongings during the trip.   The cost is higher, but you get more services. Many long-distance movers in Santa Cruz offer packing, storage, and even tracking systems so you know where your items are at all times. They are built for bigger moves that take days, not hours.   Pros of Hiring Local Movers in Santa Cruz Faster response time – You can often book them with short notice. Knowledge of the area – They know which streets are best for moving trucks. Lower cost –... --- ### Colorado Springs movers and shakers - Colorado Springs Gazette - **URL:** https://moverssantaclara.com/colorado-springs-movers-and-shakers-colorado-springs-gazette/ - **Published:** 2024-08-14 - **Modified:** 2024-08-14 - **Author:** carlofabyss **Categories:** Blog [ad_1] Colorado Springs movers and shakers  Colorado Springs Gazette [ad_2] Source link --- ### Who moved to Connecticut during COVID? Over the last several weeks, the conference has dominated the top 10. And now Boise State has crashed the party. The conference now owns six of the top nine spots in the Other Top 25. The Broncos sent shockwaves through the standings with a pair of big victories. They topped No. 17 Colorado State 65-58 on Tuesday and followed it up with a 64-56 win at Nevada Friday. Boise is now 12-4 overall. It cracked the top 50 in KenPom and sits 41st in Bart Torvik. It comes in at No. 9 in the Other Top 25. Its run last week ranked 11th in Torvik and fifth among mid-majors. BSU is one of two undefeated teams in conference play along with Utah State, who was elevated to No. 2 in this week’s ranking. The Aggies are 4-0 in the Mountain West and 16-1 overall. They have won 15 straight games, which is the nation’s longest active win streak. Their most recent victory came in dramatic fashion at UNLV. They erased a 10-point second half deficit and trailed by six with less than two minutes remaining before closing the game on a 10-3 run. USU ranks 41st in KenPom and 44th in Torvik. It is top-50 in both adjusted offensive and defensive efficiency, according to KenPom. This month, Utah State sits 12th in adjusted offensive efficiency on Torvik. Four teams joined the ranking this week: Appalachian State (18), Charleston (21), UC Irvine (23) and Akron (24). Researchers at the financial technology company looked at 268 cities included in the 2022 U.S. Census Bureau 1-Year American Community Survey to determine where millennials were moving to the most. The study defines millennials as adults between the ages of 25 and 44. This is how much money each generation needs to be ‘happy,’ new study says Overall, Census Bureau estimates found that roughly 8.2 million people moved between states in 2022, up from 7.9 million in 2021. The increase in movers, along with an increase in the percentage of state-to-state movers (18.8% in 2021 to 19.9% in 2022), continues a decade-long trend. Here is where millennials moved to the most in 2022 Cambridge, Massachusetts Santa Clara, California Seattle, Washington Sunnyvale, California Denver, Colorado Arlington, Virginia Bellevue, Washington Killeen, Texas Austin, Texas Sandy Springs, Georgia These cities attracted millennial movers due to the vast number of opportunities, managing editor for economic analysis for Smart Asset Jaclyn DeJohn told Business Insider. What it takes to be ‘wealthy’ in 12 US cities: survey Some millennials may have chosen to move to Massachusetts to pursue graduate programs at Harvard University or the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, while others opted for Santa Clara due to its proximity to Silicon Valley in Northern California, according to DeJohn. Researchers also pinpointed the cities with the lowest rates of millennials moving in. Some of those places included Santa Ana, Moreno Valley, Thousand Oaks and Lancaster in California; Port St. Lucie, Florida; and Brockton, Massachusetts. Overall, the study found that one in four millennials moved to a different city in 2022. When it comes to buying a house in those new cities, however, a recent Redfin survey found that nearly one in five (18%) millennials believe they’ll never own a home. Affordability was the main reason cited among the 5,079 U.S residents, who either moved in the last year, plan to move in 2023 or are renting the home they live in. (Photo courtesy Ken Middlebrook/History San Jose) California had been a state for less than two decades and the Civil War had ended only four years earlier when Southern Pacific built a train depot in the tiny Santa Clara Valley community of Coyote in 1869, along the first route connecting San Jose and Gilroy. And now, 155 years later, the 760 square-foot building has made the trip to San Jose, where it takes its place among the other historical buildings and artifacts at History Park. It took about 90 minutes Saturday morning for Scott House Movers, under the supervision of Garden City Construction’s Jim Salata, to truck the depot from the still-unincorporated Coyote along Monterey Highway to the historical museum at Kelley Park on Senter Road and Phelan Avenue. The Coyote train depot sits at its new home at History Park in San Jose on Saturday, May 18, 2024. It is slated to be renovated and turned into a transportation museum. (Photo courtesy Ken Middlebrook/History San Jose) History San Jose CEO Bill Schroh Jr. said he was walking through the park a few years ago when he remarked to Ken Middlebrook, History San Jose’s curator of collections, that a train depot would fit perfectly between Dashaway Stables and the rail collection of a Southern Pacific locomotive, Orchard Supply Hardware boxcar and a caboose. Fortunately, Middlebrook had one in mind. Since 2017, he had been part of a grass-roots effort to save the Coyote depot from demolition. It was owned by Union Pacific — which merged with Southern Pacific in the 1990s — and was set to be torn down because of plans for the high-speed rail line through the area. “The next day I contacted Peter Kerney of the Union Pacific Railroad and asked him how I could get the Coyote Depot to History Park,” Schroh said. “After a two-year negotiation, they sold the depot to us for $1.” A Santa Clara County grant to the California Trolley and Railroad Corp., a History San Jose affiliate, covered the costs to move the depot, which is now owned by the city of San Jose. It was the first building moved to History Park, which opened in 1977, since the Andrew P. Hill House in 1998. Schroh says History San Jose plans to restore the depot back to its original condition and convert it into a transportation museum, along with a... --- ### Movers and Shakers - San Francisco Chronicle - **URL:** https://moverssantaclara.com/movers-and-shakers-san-francisco-chronicle-3/ - **Published:** 2024-06-26 - **Modified:** 2024-06-26 - **Author:** carlofabyss **Categories:** Blog [ad_1] Movers and Shakers  San Francisco Chronicle [ad_2] Source link --- ### California cities are bleeding residents. Thirty percent of the containers storing clients’ belongings are waiting to be shipped out of state, mostly to Tennessee and Texas, Mark said. (Ray Chavez/Bay Area News Group) During the COVID-19 pandemic, it seemed like everyone knew a co-worker fleeing the Bay Area. Now, a new report out of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago shows just how much the exodus is gaining steam. Only Illinois ranked worse off than the Golden State when it came to moving vans heading for the border during the pandemic, according to the report, which focused on data from the moving company United Van Lines. In 2018-19, 56% of moves in California were families fleeing the state. In 2020-21, that figure jumped to nearly 60%. The state that was by far the biggest draw of California residents? It was Texas, the destination for more than 7,500 California families during the four years in the study, perhaps little surprise given that Silicon Valley’s tech giants like Oracle, Tesla and Hewlett Packard Enterprise picked up and moved their headquarters there too. California also continues to lose residents to Washington, Florida and Virginia while attracting consistently fewer movers arriving from those states. “Our cities have always competed with the suburbs to attract residents, but now they’re competing against every single other area in America,” said Matthew Kahn, an urban economics professor at USC and author of a recent book on the remote economy. “It’s San Francisco against Boise, Idaho, or Bozeman, Montana. We’ve never seen this before.” California’s largest cities have been steadily hemorrhaging residents since the start of the pandemic. For the first time since 2013, San Jose’s population dropped below 1 million, and San Francisco’s population has dropped by more than 3% in the past two years. Even Los Angeles saw its population steadily decline during the pandemic. A continuing exodus from these cities, experts say, could eventually translate to a major shake-up across housing markets, demographics and corporate landscapes. Attracting residents from other states is about more than just bragging rights in the increasingly bitter rivalry between California Gov. Gavin Newsom and red-state governors in Florida and Texas. It’s about increasing tax revenue, obtaining larger pots of federal funding and wrestling away congressional seats. While California lost a congressional seat as a result of the 2020 Census, the Lone Star State gained two and the Sunshine State added another. California’s struggle to keep its residents from hitting the road is nothing new. But the acceleration is the product of a slew of pandemic-related shifts to the employment market that has seen an increasingly flexible workforce disperse across the nation, said Daryl Fairweather, the chief economist at real estate brokerage Redfin. Tech hubs like Silicon Valley are the center of the crisis, she said, as remote work opportunities paired with rising housing costs are... --- ### Smoke from Redwood City fire spreads to Santa Clara County - SFGATE - **URL:** https://moverssantaclara.com/smoke-from-redwood-city-fire-spreads-to-santa-clara-county-sfgate/ - **Published:** 2024-06-22 - **Modified:** 2024-06-22 - **Author:** carlofabyss **Categories:** Blog [ad_1] Smoke from Redwood City fire spreads to Santa Clara County  SFGATE [ad_2] Source link --- ### Movers and Shakers - SFGATE - **URL:** https://moverssantaclara.com/movers-and-shakers-sfgate/ - **Published:** 2024-06-20 - **Modified:** 2024-06-20 - **Author:** carlofabyss **Categories:** Blog [ad_1] Movers and Shakers  SFGATE [ad_2] Source link --- ### D.A. alleges moving fee scam – Monterey Herald - **URL:** https://moverssantaclara.com/d-a-alleges-moving-fee-scam-monterey-herald/ - **Published:** 2024-06-18 - **Modified:** 2024-06-18 - **Author:** carlofabyss **Categories:** Blog [ad_1] FLASH SALE Don't miss this deal Standard Digital Access $6 for 1 year Already a subscriber? According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Seattle has the second-highest percentage of people considering or planning to move away. Over the next 12 months, census workers report that 171,000 households will leave King County. KOMO News poured through census records to find out where so many people are headed.Out of 127,000 people who've moved away from King County in a four-year period, census records found that 37% of movers stayed somewhat local, going to either Snohomish, Pierce, or Kitsap counties. For more people who ditched Washington altogether, records show that they moved to mostly for warmer places.Number one on the list is Maricopa County, Ariz., followed by Los Angeles County, Calif., and Santa Clara County, Calif."The warm weather, I assume, is what most people are going for. Just to see the sun more than 100 days a year," said Todd Jeffress, a Seattle-based flight attendant moving to Texas this summer.Jeffress added that he will start attending pilot school and could not afford to live in King County any longer."Luckily, I have a lovely lady that'll support me and be my 'sugar mama' for nine months," he joked. Also in Texas is Rocky Martinez, who left King County last summer after losing his firefighting job because of Washington's vaccine mandate.“People don’t feel safe anymore," he told KOMO News, citing police's inability to chase after drivers during certain crimes.Peter Seifert can relate. He moved to Minnesota from Seattle in 2021 as he prepared to start a family."Do I feel safe enough walking to the park with my one-year-old kid just to play a little bit?" he asked hypothetically. "Who knows what could happen?"As crime spikes and affordability takes a hit, census numbers indicate even more people may leave King County. Even before the pandemic, the U.S. Census Bureau found that King County lost more people than it gained. It’s in the California pine beams and vertical moss wall at Zendesk’s new offices in San Francisco’s Mid-Market neighborhood. It’s in Lise Feng’s cubicle at CipherCloud, where wall-to-wall windows feature jet planes flying into and out of San Jose. And it’s in the meeting rooms at 1st United Services Credit Union in Pleasanton, where the company has moved back into expanded, spiffed-up offices. “From a relocation and construction perspective, the area’s on fire right now,” says Megan Lovelace, an industry veteran whose consulting group FaciliCorp has been moving companies big and small around the region for 20 years. “And with everyone so busy and everything moving at Silicon Valley speed, things can get a little crazy at times.” The Bay Area is not only booming — it’s moving all over the place. CipherCloud spokeswoman Feng says her cloud-security company has moved six times in the past four years. In a peripatetic reflection of the regional tech frenzy, well-funded startups from Oakland to Marin to Fremont are dumping more humble digs for larger spaces tricked out by trendy design firms. More established companies like Apple and Google are scarfing up addresses all over Silicon Valley to house their burgeoning work forces. And as the moving-and-storage professionals work, the clients and their employees grapple with the logistical and emotional fallout from this regional game of musical chairs. “People get very connected to their space, and moving to a new office can be very discombobulating,” says clinical psychologist Tom Plante, a professor at Santa Clara University. “But all this moving around is symptomatic of life today in Silicon Valley, where you have to be used to change if you want to survive here.” For Mark Beltramo, general manager of San Jose-based commercial movers Bartels Moving Systems, the current boom’s mostly expansionary nature sure beats the opposite. “We worked the dot-com boom and bust and the Great Recession,” he says, “and this is a lot more fun. “The hardest moves are when you’re closing an office and you have a building full of people who are losing their jobs,” says Beltramo, who recalls tough economic times when his crews had to discreetly do the move in the middle of the night, often with security guards on duty. “That’s tough.” For 1st United Services Credit Union in the East Bay, its post-recessionary move wasn’t dramatic — it relocated for a few years across the street and then settled back into its revamped and redesigned offices. But the move offered management a chance to address layout flaws in the old digs while giving employees a morale-boosting new work space in the process. “The design of the new environment gave different departments more opportunities to collaborate,” said Ed Renteria, chief operations officer. “Plus, everyone likes moving into a building where all the furniture and cubicles are new,... --- ### Colorado Springs Movers & Shakers: Rich Scholes, Ent Credit Union | Business - **URL:** https://moverssantaclara.com/colorado-springs-movers-shakers-rich-scholes-ent-credit-union-business/ - **Published:** 2024-06-10 - **Modified:** 2024-06-10 - **Author:** carlofabyss **Categories:** Blog [ad_1] Ent Credit Union has hired Rich Scholes as its senior vice president of planning and execution. We are a service company offering last-mile delivery.” With the money raised, Momentus plans to demonstrate its Vigoride rocket powered by water-plasma thrusters in orbit in 2019, said Kokorich, a serial entrepreneur. Prime Movers Lab of Jackson, Wyoming, led the investment round for Momentus, which participated in Y Combinator, a well-known startup accelerator in Mountain View, California. Also participating in the investment round were: Liquid 2 Ventures, One Way Ventures, Mountain Nazca and Y Combinator. “Momentus has not only developed groundbreaking and efficient water-powered in-space rockets but also validated the massive market demand for their services with hundreds of millions of dollars in Letters of Intent,” Dakin Sloss, Prime Movers Lab founder and general partner, said in a statement. “We are thrilled to back this extraordinary team of seasoned entrepreneurs and space industry veterans in their impressive pace of introducing novel technology to space, which we expect will continue with the upcoming in-space demonstration in the first half of 2019.” Momentus plans to begin offering in-space transportation in 2020 with Vigoride, a rocket to move payloads as large as 50 kilograms from low Earth orbit to geostationary transfer orbit, geostationary orbit, lunar orbit or other destinations. In 2020, Momentus plans to begin testing its next-generation Ardoride, a rocket designed to move 180 kilograms from low Earth to lunar orbit or 250 kilograms from geostationary transfer orbit to Mars orbit. Momentus is seeking to dramatically reduce the price of in-space transportation. “We would like to make it extremely cheap,” Kokorich said. “The ticket price for a 100- to 200-kilogram payload from Earth to low Earth orbit and low Earth orbit to Moon orbit should be below $10 million. I hope we can be way below $10 million.” Prior to founding Momentus, Kokorich helped established satellite manufacturer Dauria Aerospace, Internet-of-Things startup Helios Wire, ExactFarming, a firm that applies modern technology to agriculture, and Astro Digital, a satellite imagery and analysis company. --- ### Partners Real Estate Rogers Healy, KAI, Weitzman changes - **URL:** https://moverssantaclara.com/partners-real-estate-rogers-healy-kai-weitzman-changes/ - **Published:** 2024-06-02 - **Modified:** 2024-06-02 - **Author:** carlofabyss **Categories:** Blog [ad_1] ➤ Houston-based Partners Real Estate added Evan Altemus to oversee brokerage services for its new DFW office, with a focus on multi-tenant sales. Candid is an app that enables real-time exchanges between candid photographers and brands. Nariman Haghighi is Candid’s CEO and co-founder. Where did you grow up?I grew up mostly in Toronto. My family immigrated here from Tehran in 1989. I spent grades 1 and 2 there and have a ton of great memories, but the rest of my life has been centered in Toronto and it’s always been home to me.  Where did you go to University and what did you take? I studied Computer Science at the University of Waterloo. When you went to Waterloo, what kind of career did you think you would get into when you finished school? Waterloo is an extremely structured school. You start interning in your first year, and for most students there, it sets the tone for the rest of your career. I knew I would be working on web software… and all 6 of my internships had a web software focus, so I had a pretty good idea of the type of career that would lead to. I only know of a handful of cases in my program where the people went on to do something entirely different.   What was your first job out of University? My first job was technically a software development position with NVIDIA in Santa Clara. I did my last 3 internships there. They offered me a full-time gig when I was done school and I signed. I came back to Toronto for graduation and to spend the summer, before moving back to the Valley. I took what I thought was a temp position with a small boutique consulting firm called imason inc. that I had worked with in the past and I loved working there so much that I decided to stay. The Valley is great on so many levels, but leaving your hometown is never easy. Yeah, I know what you mean. How did the idea for Candid come about? My partner Dominic Gignac and I started FiveAces last summer to allow businesses to better leverage outside expertise (the crowd) in strategic ways that benefited both sides. We had both worked at Workopolis, so we both had a lot of experience with Recruitment/HR and our first approach to the problem was ElasticForce, a marketplace that would make it easier to collaborate across companies, a few hours at a time. We pivoted over to Candid after a few months because we saw the mobile photography space as a more natural way to deliver the same benefit to a much larger market.   How did you settle on the name? Candid.io is something I had registered months earlier while out for dinner with my friend Andy Anthony, then set aside. He had a crazy idea around a marketplace where you could request a photo of anything you wanted to see around the city, and someone in the vicinity would take a photo for you... --- ### Time to put those green lanes to use - **URL:** https://moverssantaclara.com/time-to-put-those-green-lanes-to-use/ - **Published:** 2024-05-29 - **Modified:** 2024-05-29 - **Author:** carlofabyss **Categories:** Blog [ad_1] San Jose Mayor, Sam Liccardo, center, joins a group of bike riders near the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library during Bike to Work Day in San Jose, Calif., on Thursday, May 11, 2017. The Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition, of course, would love to see more of the once-a-year commuters turn into more regular cyclists. You can start by pledging to ride on Thursday, and if you’re more enthusiastic you also can get a team together to register for the Bay Area Bike Challenge, committing to ride for the entire month of May. There are more than 150 “energizer” stations around the Bay Area, where cyclists can get tote bags, refreshments and aid if needed. One of the big ones is at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Main Library in downtown San Jose, where San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition Executive Director Shiloh Ballard and others will provide remarks during a 7:15 a.m. program. That will be followed by the traditional “Movers and Shakers” ride, a 7-mile trip along the Guadalupe River Trail to VTA headquarters on North First Street. Any member of the public can join for all or part of the ride. Three “Bike Away from Work” events are also planned starting at 5:30 p.m. at LinkedIn’s Sunnyvale headquarters, Summit Bicycles in Palo Alto and Cyclismo Cafe in Redwood City. The most popular destination for Bay Area refugees remains Sacramento, followed by other tech hubs and California cities. “It’s pretty much in line with what we’ve seen for the past few years,” said Taylor Marr, senior economist at Redfin. “Many people leaving the Bay Area are still looking in California.” Get top headlines in your inbox every afternoon. The steady climb in real estate prices has made first-time home-buying expensive and frustrating for many newcomers.  And rents continued to rise year over year, especially around tech giant headquarters in Silicon Valley. The median price in December for a single-family home in Santa Clara County was $1.2 million, while a similar home in San Mateo was $1.4 million, and in Alameda, $838,000, according to real estate firm CoreLogic. A comparable home in Sacramento is $314,000, according to Zillow. Overall, the region’s population continues to grow. But the number of outgoing residents has hit its highest point in more than a decade, according to a report released Wednesday by Joint Venture Silicon Valley. People are leaving Silicon Valley nearly as quickly as they are coming in. Between July 2015 and July 2017, the region gained 44,732 immigrants but lost 44,102 residents to other parts of California and the country, according to the regional think tank. The population drops have been most notable on residents between the ages of 18 and 24, and between 45 and 64. Redfin analysts combine sales data and searches on their website to determine where users are moving. For the past nine months, San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles have had the highest number of residents moving out. About 1 in 4 Bay Area residents looking to leave searched for homes in Sacramento, and nearly 1 in 10 browsed Seattle listings. The top five destinations for Bay Area movers were Sacramento, Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland and San Diego. Which metro areas have been experiencing the largest gains and losses? Based on a March 2023 analysis of Freddie Mac Loan Product Advisor® (LPA) data, the following tables show the metro areas with the largest 12-month net gains and losses, as well as the percentage rate of change compared to the prior year. Overall, the number of migrating homebuyers, on a rolling 12-month period, more than tripled between March 2020 and March 2022. And though the pace of migration has slowed in the past 12 months, net migration remains elevated compared to the 12-month period ending March 2021. The nation’s top 10 metro areas with the largest positive net migration over the past 12 months saw a 20% reduction in net migration gains compared to the previous 12-month period. Only Lakeland-Winter Haven, Fla., experienced an additional net migration growth of 6%, moving up seven places to third. Interestingly, total 12-month net migration as of March 2023 into these popular destinations remained higher than it was between April 2020 and March 2021 except for two areas: Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, Calif., and North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton, Fla. Metro Areas with the Largest Net Migration Gains Source: LPA data For the nation’s top 10 metro areas with the largest negative net migration over the past 12 months, net migration losses slowed by 17% compared to the previous 12-month period. Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach, Fla., was the lone exception, as net migration losses increased by 52%, pushing it up three places to eighth. Total net migration out of these large metro areas was higher than it was between April 2020 and March 2021 except for three areas: San Francisco-Oakland-Berkeley, Calif., San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Calif., and Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, Ill.-Ind.-Wis. Metro Areas with the Largest Net Migration Losses Source: LPA data To track these net migration patterns, we analyzed all accepted purchase loan applications submitted to Freddie Mac’s LPA system between April 2019 and March 2023, which offers the advantage of allowing up to the minute analysis compared to U.S. Census data. We caution that the loan application data provides a limited view of conventional conforming loans rather than the total market, which includes government-backed loans, non-conforming loans and conventional conforming loan applications not submitted to Freddie Mac. Also, loan application data only captures the intent to move. The pandemic intensified existing homebuyer migration patterns and shows a population in pursuit of affordable housing. The highest homebuyer net migration losses have occurred in high-cost, inelastic markets located in coastal areas. The metro areas experiencing the most gains in homebuyer net migration are smaller, more affordable destinations found more inland and to the south. The award highlights 50 individuals who help move library work forward, as advocates, community builders, change agents, innovators, educators and “ban battlers.” Clare Varesio, library services manager for the Santa Clara County Library District and former community librarian responsible for Cupertino Library, served as the point person on two major health-related initiatives in 2023. One was a partnership with the Santa Clara County Behavioral Health Services Department to bring mental health access programs to district libraries. Varesio also helped organize community workshops on administering the anti-opioid overdose drug naloxone—also called Narcan—to someone experiencing an overdose. Nearly 400 community members learned how to recognize an opioid overdose and how to safely administer the life-saving nasal spray. Varesio has been with SCCLD since 2007. She is one of two librarians in the Santa Clara County Library District to be named a Mover and Shaker.  Elizabeth Muñoz-Rosas, who serves as the children’s supervising librarian at the Gilroy Library, also won an award. “Our 2024 Movers represent a range of innovative, proactive and supportive work; they are imaginative and kind and brave in a world that needs those qualities—and the results they produce—very much,” said Library Journal executive editor Lisa Peet in a statement. Not only is California to Texas migration not slowing down but the route is also getting more crowded. This route is obviously not a one-way street, but Texans tend to move to California in much smaller numbers. In 2021, a total of 33,000 Lone Star residents made California their home. Key Findings: California to Texas is the most popular interstate relocation route in the U.S., only challenged by New York to Florida, with 93,000 people making the move 2021 was a record-breaking year in terms of California to Texas move-ins, with roughly 111,000 people taking the route In 2021, about 1 in 2 people who migrated from CA to TX were millennials Santa Clara to Dallas County brings in the most savings if you want to buy a home, with a 258% difference in listing prices ($410,000 vs. $1,467,000) The reasons behind a California-to-Texas move are varied, but affordability and job options are major incentives that support the decision to swap one state for another. Among the things that help lure people to Texas are the no-income tax policy, the lower cost of living, and the robust employment opportunities significantly bolstered by the tech and energy sectors. The remote work trend is further fueling the movement, as many people who are no longer tied down to an office can easily choose friendlier housing markets, sometimes without letting go of their considerable Californian paychecks. In addition to lower housing costs, transplants also get somewhat larger living spaces, with single-family homes in Texas being 17% bigger than Californian residences. Utilities are generally cheaper in Texas as well, roughly 20% less than in California. Texas has actively pursued an economic strategy that includes creating a business-friendly environment that helped not only to retain businesses but also attract new ones, including some high-profile movers such as Elon Musk and Joe Rogan, who relocated some of their activities here. As it turns out, over 100 companies have moved their headquarters to Texas since 2020, with 40% of them coming from California. Millennials with above-average incomes drive California to Texas migration Most people moving from California to Texas are millennials, making up 46% of those decamping to Texas. Gen Xers are also jumping on the bandwagon, with 21% of those who moved to Texas being 40- to 55-year-olds. Baby boomers and Gen Zers are also joining in, but in much smaller numbers. The millennials who moved to Texas come with a household income of $114,000 per year, 21% more than what millennials bring home overall at a national level ($94,000 per year). It was followed by Santa Clara, California, and Seattle. This is according to a SmartAsset analysis of the 268 cities included in the recently released 2022 US Census Bureau 1-Year American Community Survey. SmartAsset defined millennials as people between the ages of 25 and 44.The common thread to the cities that drew millennials is opportunity, managing editor for economic analysis for SmartAsset, Jaclyn DeJohn told Business Insider."The reason we're seeing some diversity within the top 10 is just a reflection of people choosing different lifestyles and paths," she said. Many millennials moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, for graduate programs at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, employment opportunities in nearby Boston, and the city's high quality of life. Millennials who moved to Cambridge in 2022 made up nearly 15% of the total population. Nearly 17,300 millennials relocated to Cambridge in 2022, bringing the total percentage of millennials to 38% of the total population. The tech hub of Santa Clara in Silicon Valley, which hosts the headquarters of Intel and Nvidia, has attracted lots of talent over the last few years, despite a very high cost of living — the median home sale price is over $1.5 million, according to Redfin. The city saw an influx of over 16,600 millennials last year — about 13.3% of the total population. This brought millennials to 40% of Santa Clara's total population, which has a median age of 35. Austin's tech scene is drawing movers to the Lone Star State, while the budding film industry in Georgia has attracted millennials to Sandy Springs, DeJohn said.In 2022, one in four millennials moved to a different city. Though many moved for work, others working remote positions relocated for a lower cost of living or a change of pace."Millennials are older now than they've ever been, so people are starting to settle down and have families," DeJohn said. "A lot of the traditional life script at that point is to move out to the suburbs and get a little more space for the family. So it's likely that there's a lot of that happening there."Seattle and Sunnyvale, California, also saw comparable moves, as millennials who moved in 2022 made up about 12.5% of the total population for both cities. Both saw an influx of tech workers who could afford to pay the high price tags.Cities such as Denver; Bellevue, Washington; and Arlington, Virginia, also saw large influxes of millennials. Arlington had the highest rate of millennial movers from out of state at 5.2% of the total population. Hialeah, Florida, and Arlington were particularly popular cities for foreign millennials.Killeen, Texas, located about halfway between Austin and Waco, ranked eighth on the list as the home of the Fort Hood military base. When looking at the top cities by percentage of total millennials compared to the total population, Jersey... --- ### Italian Street Painting Marin hires new program director – Marin Independent Journal - **URL:** https://moverssantaclara.com/italian-street-painting-marin-hires-new-program-director-marin-independent-journal/ - **Published:** 2024-05-09 - **Modified:** 2024-05-09 - **Author:** carlofabyss **Categories:** Blog [ad_1] Julie Jehly of Rohnert Park has been appointed as the new program director for Italian Street Painting Marin. (KTLA) – When it comes to the top 10 places millennials moved to the most in 2022, cities in Texas and California take up nearly half of the list, according to a recent study from Smart Asset. This is how much money is needed to be considered ‘wealthy’ in California Some millennials may have chosen to move to Massachusetts to pursue graduate programs at Harvard University or the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, while others opted for Santa Clara due to its proximity to Silicon Valley in Northern California, according to DeJohn. Copyright 2024 Nexstar Media Inc. Alexi Rosenfeld/Getty Images Moving company scams are on the rise, and almost half originate in Florida.  These fraudulent moving brokers and carriers will charge additional fees or take customers' stuff hostage. One customer of a Florida-based moving company told Insider she lost nearly all of her belongings.   More Americans than ever are moving to Florida. The state had the largest population gain last year with nearly 320,000 new residents moving in from elsewhere in the US. But the Sunshine State is also increasingly home to scammers operating fraudulent moving companies targeting Florida residents and people across the country. These companies will often offer customers a low estimate and deposit price, and then demand additional exorbitant fees after taking their belongings hostage. Moving company scams doubled between 2015 and 2022, and Florida-based companies made up almost half of all customer complaints nationally, Newsweek reported based on data from the Department of Transportation. The scam usually begins with a moving broker, who solicits a customer, sets up the move, and then finds a carrier to pick up and transport the person's belongings. It's easy to become a broker in Florida, where establishing an LLC costs just $125. For $600, the Department of Transportation will then approve a broker's license."You just go online, make up a fake name, and that's it and you're up and running. No one's regulating," Susan Chana Lask, a New York-based consumer rights attorney who settled a lawsuit last year with a Florida-based moving company, told Insider. "It's just a name with an LLC for 100 bucks."  The Florida Attorney General's office says the warning signs of a moving scam include low moving cost estimates, estimates given sight unseen, demands for full payment before the move, storage fees, and a moving business that's had multiple name changes. A couple's possessions vanish to a storage unit 1,000 miles awayNissa Wisuttismarn was desperate for a mover in October 2020 when she needed to take the contents of her storage unit in Santa Clara, California, to Missouri City, Texas, where she and her husband had relocated during the pandemic. After the first company she hired backed out just days before the move, Wisuttismarn reached out to a Florida-based company called Compass Movers. She paid Compass, which she didn't realize was just a broker, an initial deposit of about $2,400, then another $350, and an additional $2,500 when the movers picked up her things, according to a receipt Wisuttismarn provided Insider. The couple's belongings — nearly all of their possessions — were supposed to get to Missouri City between 10 and 14 days later. But when it comes to those who choose to call California home, the numbers are shrinking as more individuals are choosing to move out of the state than into it. These California statistics might shock you including a surprising decrease in residents as well as the relentless rise in housing and utility expenses. Whether you’re already researching what the best California moving companies are as you’re contemplating California as your new home or if you’re considering leaving it for somewhere new, this comprehensive guide provides essential insights into how the state is evolving. California Moving Trends In 2022, California gained 475,803 residents but lost 817,669 residents. In 2022, California experienced a net loss of 341,866 residents, with 475,803 individuals moving into the state but 817,669 moving out, according to the U.S. Census. This significant discrepancy highlights a concerning trend of outmigration that poses challenges for the state’s population growth and demographic balance. This significant demographic shift will certainly affect California as a whole, including impacts on the housing markets, workforce availability, tax revenues and more. It also emphasizes the importance of working to address the underlying factors that are driving people out of the state, like affordability issues, job prospects, environmental concerns and more. Most migrants moving to California moved to Los Angeles.    The U.S. Census reports that for those who did move to California (from out of state and abroad), the most moved-to city was Los Angeles, with an impressive 90,979 people moving in. Following that was San Diego with 60,031 people moving in, San Francisco with  34,351 people moving in and San Jose with 26,110 people moving in. 352 companies moved out of California between 2018 and 2021. Residents aren’t alone in choosing to leave the Golden State—businesses are too. Stanford University’s Hoover Institution reports that 352 companies moved their headquarters from California to a different state between 2018 and 2021.  This exodus of businesses indicates a prominent shift in California's economic landscape which will surely impact employment opportunities, tax revenues and the overall economic vitality of the state. Factors such as increasingly high operating costs, strict regulations and concerns over the business climate are cited as reasons companies are choosing to relocate.  As businesses look for better conditions elsewhere, California may struggle to retain its status as a leading hub for innovation and entrepreneurship while experiencing competition from other states. Texas is the top state that Californians are moving to. All of the individuals leaving California had to relocate somewhere, and Texas was the most popular choice, with 102,442 people moving there, according to U.S. Census data. Arizona was the second most moved-into state for those leaving California, with 4,157 individuals moving there, followed by Florida with 50,701 moving in. Why Are People Moving Out of California? For the last two decades, California lost more residents than it gained each... --- ### Computer With $10K of Bitcoin Stolen During Movers Ransom Scam - **URL:** https://moverssantaclara.com/computer-with-10k-of-bitcoin-stolen-during-movers-ransom-scam/ - **Published:** 2024-04-15 - **Modified:** 2024-04-15 - **Author:** carlofabyss **Categories:** Blog [ad_1] Yesterday, a computer and television were stolen by a team of three suspects in Saratoga, California. The three were allegedly acting as movers and helping a family to load their items into and off of a moving truck. According to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s office, the three movers met the family through “a mutual acquaintance”. Things didn’t turn out so well, however, as the suspects demanded money, and paid themselves by taking a computer loaded with bitcoin. Movers Ransom A type of scam that has been unfortunately growing is what’s known in some circles as a movers ransom. Basically speaking, a bogus moving company or independent movers will get all of a clients items loaded onto a truck. At this point, they may drive a short distance or even all the way to the destination. Then, the swindle begins. The scammers will typically start to demand additional compensation. If the compensation is not given, scammers will threaten to take things, break objects, or simply drive the truck away with everything inside. Since the victim is in a very weak position as all of their belongings are locked away in a truck, many of them will comply and pay extra money. In the Saratoga case, the Sheriff’s office said: “When [the] victims refuse to pay more than the agreed-upon rate, the three suspects decided to compensate themselves by forcibly taking the victims TV and Apple iMac computer”. The Hidden Treasure Trove Unbeknownst to the thieving group, the stolen computer apparently was loaded with a bitcoin wallet that held around $10,000 worth of the cryptocurrency. What’s interesting about this is that cases like this could end up setting an important precedent for the future. In most countries, if someone is caught stealing property, the degree of punishment given is often related to the value of goods stolen. For example, stealing a bicycle is often considered a lesser crime than stealing a Ferrari. The Suspects, Image from Apacnewswire In the US, a minor theft is known as petty larceny. A major theft, on the other hand, is known as grand larceny, and comes with serious jail time and a permanent felony record that will follow the perpetrator for life. The law is also not explicitly clear on a dollar amount that would equal petty versus grand larceny. But what happens if someone steals an old laptop worth say one hundred dollars, but that laptop contained one million dollars in cryptocurrency? Would the thief who stole the laptop, not knowing what was on it, be subject to punishment equivalent to stealing $1 million worth of property? To make things even more complicated, what if the thief stole a device that had keys to an altcoin stash that was nearly worthless, but then later pumped up in value massively after the perpetrator was already arrested? And what point would the value apply to the punishment, if at all? Always Keep Backup Keys This goes without saying, but anyone who stores cryptocurrency needs to... --- ### Lugg expands on-demand moving service to San Jose – The Mercury News - **URL:** https://moverssantaclara.com/lugg-expands-on-demand-moving-service-to-san-jose-the-mercury-news/ - **Published:** 2024-04-14 - **Modified:** 2024-04-14 - **Author:** Movers Santa Clara **Categories:** Blog **Tags:** expands, Jose, Lugg, Mercury, Moving, News, ondemand, San, service FLASH OFFER Do not let this offer slide Standard digital access $6 for 1 year Already a subscriber? Registration It's the question everyone dreads: "Will you help me move?" The sheer terror that many people feel when faced with moving an apartment full of furniture or even just a single heavy item is the driving force behind Lugg – a new on-demand moving app. The company, founded about a year ago in San Francisco, expanded its service to San Jose on Thursday. “We like to say it’s your new friend with a truck,” said co-founder and CEO Jordan Brown. The company works similarly to Uber. Drivers of trucks or vans register as “loggers” and are matched via the app with people who need to transport items. The goal is to have a truck on site no later than 15 to 20 minutes after the request, Brown said. This quick turnaround could be especially handy for trips to Costco or Ikea, where customers need a way to bring large purchases home. (No word on whether the Luggers will stick around to help you assemble the Ikea couch.) The average trip within a 10-mile radius costs about $50, Brown said. This includes a base fee of $35 plus an additional $2 per mile. The drivers keep around 60 percent of the fare, the rest goes to Lugg. The company expanded to Palo Alto and San Mateo last month. With the latest expansion to San Jose, users can request a truck from anywhere on the Peninsula, San Francisco or Oakland. Fremont and Hayward are coming soon, Brown said. Brown said Lugg has raised about $4.5 million from investors including Sequoia Capital and SV Angel and is also backed by Y Combinator. The company joins other companies in the on-demand moving space, such as Ghostruck, which offers services in San Francisco. Dolly and Wagon offer similar services in several other major U.S. cities, but have not yet come to the Bay Area. Mike Howell, Dolly's co-founder and CEO, told GeekWire that the team moved the company to Seattle because they wanted to avoid the "droning noise and crowded hype of the Bay Area." According to preliminary data from Gartner, worldwide semiconductor revenue totaled $533 billion in 2023. That's down 11.1 percent year over year, but it was even worse for memory segments. Global DRAM revenue fell by 38.5 percent to $48.4 billion, and NAND flash wasn't far behind with a year-over-year decline of 37.5 percent to $36.2 billion. Joe Unsworth, VP analyst at Gartner, said weaker than expected demand and excess inventory for smartphones, PCs, and servers, especially in the first half of the year, largely contributed to the declines. There were a few sunny spots in an otherwise overcast year. Intel reclaimed the number one overall spot after two years in second place, besting rival Samsung with $48.67 billion in revenue. Still, it's down 16.7 percent from the $58.44 billion the company earned in 2022. Samsung finished in second place with $39.91 billion and a 7.5 percent market share, a drop of 37.5 percent compared to the $63.82 billion generated in 2022. 2023 Rank 2022 Rank Vendor 2023 Revenue 2023 Market Share % 2022 Revenue Growth % 1 2 Intel 48.664 9.1 58.436 -16.7 2 1 Samsung 39.905 7.5 63.823 -37.5 3 3 Qualcomm 29.015 5.4 34.780 -16.6 4 6 Broadcom 25.585 4.8 23.868 7.2 5 12 Nvidia 23.983 4.5 15.331 56.4 6 4 SK Hynix 22.756 4.3 33.505 -32.1 7 7 AMD 22.305 4.2 23.620 -5.6 8 11 STMicroelectronics 17.057 3.2 15.842 7.7 9 9 Apple 17.050 3.2 18.099 -5.8 10 8 Texas Instruments 16.537 3.1 18.844 -12.2     Others 268.853 50.7 294.729 -8.8     Total Market 533.025 100.0 599.562 -11.1 The biggest winner in the top five was without a doubt Nvidia. The GPU maker climbed seven spots from 2022 to finish last year with $23.98 billion in revenue, up 56.4 percent. It's the highest position Nvidia has ever held, and is largely due to recent success in the artificial intelligence market. STMicroelectronics also had an impressive showing in 2023, improving from just outside the top 10 at number 11 to finish in eighth place. The Swiss-based tech company accounted for 3.2 percent of the market on $17.06 billion in revenue, an increase of 7.7 percent over 2022. Broadcom, which placed fourth with $25.89 billion in revenue, also saw positive growth of 7.2 percent year on year. But at least one builder in Morgan Hill has taken aim to relocate and preserve the trees that have been in the ground since long before any development plans were approved. Weston Miles Architects recently hired Mighty Tree Movers, also based in Morgan Hill, to move eight mature trees—some fruit bearing—from the footprint of an upcoming construction project on Depot Street, while keeping the plants alive and thriving. David Hamilton, owner of Mighty Tree Movers, and his crew moved the biggest of these trees on April 15. That morning, Hamilton used his massive hydraulic tree spade hooked up to a truck to move a 35-foot, 15-year-old London Plane tree. The crew and truck moved the tree about 50 feet—from its birthsite on the south side of the parking lot next to the Granary building to a spot closer to the sidewalk on Depot Street. The tree, and others moved by Hamilton in previous days, was standing in the way of the final phase in the development of the Granary District, explained Lesley Miles of Weston Miles Architects, owner of the project. Construction on that phase—a two-story, 2,750-square-foot commercial building west of the Union Pacific railroad tracks and just next to where the district’s signature grain silos stand—is likely to start this summer. Weston Miles Architects co-owners Miles and Charles Weston preferred to save the existing trees on the property rather than destroy them. “The opportunity to move a tree rather than cut it down is huge,” Miles said. “It really is a viable option.” When the couple first began developing the Granary District about 15 years ago, there were no trees on the property, which extends to the corner of East Main Avenue. Miles and Weston planted heritage fruit trees, Blenheim apricots and Italian plums—some of which occupy the district’s signature private orchard. The couple also planted a number of London Planes, California Live Oaks and flowering crabapples. “With our new project…we needed to adjust the trees,” Miles said. “Instead of cutting down the trees, we looked into moving the trees.” Miles noted that it doesn’t cost that much more to move a tree in its live state than it does to cut it down and discard it. But that’s just one of many advantages to saving a tree during construction or remodeling, Miles added:It’s a sustainable way to mix human and animal life; mature trees keep property values up; it preserves homes for birds and other wildlife; and it offers cool shade in the summer months. Thus the developer reached out to Hamilton at Mighty Tree Movers. Hamilton, a certified arborist and Morgan Hill resident, has been in the tree replanting, removal and storage business for nearly a dozen years. Before that, he had a career in high technology, during which time he maintained an active bonsai... --- ### A moving story: How consumers get victimized - Capitol Weekly | Capitol Weekly - **URL:** https://moverssantaclara.com/a-moving-story-how-consumers-get-victimized-capitol-weekly-capitol-weekly/ - **Published:** 2024-04-07 - **Modified:** 2024-04-07 - **Author:** carlofabyss **Categories:** Blog [ad_1] Gwen Caplan’s nightmare began with a Yelp search. It was the summer of 2012 and the middle-aged mother of two was looking for someone to move her and her kids from San Rafael, Calif., to Glendale, Ariz. Money was tight, so Caplan scoured the web for an affordable but reputable moving company. Over the years, Congress has done little to address moving scams, other than to hold an occasional hearing. Her search unearthed several moving companies. One was called America’s Best Movers. It had terrible reviews online. “I said to myself, ‘It’s a good thing I used Yelp. I’m not going to use these people,’ ” Caplan would later tell a criminal grand jury. Eventually, she found a company in San Jose called Encore Moving, which advertised that it had been in business for 10 years and had an A-plus rating with the Better Business Bureau. Caplan said she could find only one review of the company, and it wasn’t critical. She decided to ask for a quote. Little did Caplan know, Encore was lying. Encore was a new entity, established just that year as an alternate business name for ASAP Relocations, a notorious San Jose moving company that once had an F rating from the Better Business Bureau. Prosecutors would later surmise that ASAP’s owner, an Israeli national with a fondness for gambling and expensive cars, established the Encore name as a means of escaping ASAP’s poor reputation. In fact, Encore wasn’t ASAP’s only alternate business name. It also went by the name America’s Best Movers. # # # ASAP Relocations is the rare example of a moving scam that was prosecuted. The results were mixed, reflecting the stubborn persistence of these frauds. Some of the suspects even fled the country to escape prosecution. This story draws on 12 days of grand jury proceedings in which former employees and associates laid bare the scam’s inner workings. The record, never before made public, provides a glimpse into a kind of fraud that has become all too common in the United States. “You’re moving 1,200 miles away. You have a time frame that you have to do this by. What are you going to do? You have absolutely no choice.” About 35 million Americans will make local or long-distance moves over the next year, and many are at risk of coming into contact with a scammer. The problem, however, is particularly acute for moves made across state lines. States regulate local moves within their borders, but the federal government oversees interstate moves – and it devotes few resources to regulation and enforcement. Possessions held hostageEvery year, the feds receive roughly 3,000 complaints about interstate moves, although that number likely represents only a fraction of aggrieved consumers because, among other things, many don’t know they can file a complaint. Of the complaints filed, about 600 involve so-called “hostage goods” situations, when a mover packs up a person’s belongings and demands more money before delivery. “It’s just like being robbed,” said Lisa... --- ### Stock Movers: NatWest, Amazon, Intel, Decker, DexCom, Sanofi, Ford, Enphase - MarketWatch - **URL:** https://moverssantaclara.com/stock-movers-natwest-amazon-intel-decker-dexcom-sanofi-ford-enphase-marketwatch/ - **Published:** 2024-04-05 - **Modified:** 2024-04-05 - **Author:** carlofabyss **Categories:** Blog [ad_1] Stock Movers: NatWest, Amazon, Intel, Decker, DexCom, Sanofi, Ford, Enphase  MarketWatch [ad_2] Source link --- ### California cities are bleeding residents. --- ### U-Haul Offers 30 Days Free Self-Storage to Victims - **URL:** https://moverssantaclara.com/u-haul-offers-30-days-free-self-storage-to-victims/ - **Published:** 2024-04-01 - **Modified:** 2024-04-01 - **Author:** carlofabyss **Categories:** Blog [ad_1] OAKLAND, Calif., Oct. 29, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- U-Haul® is offering 30 days of free self-storage and U-Box® container usage to residents affected by the ongoing wildfires in California.Tens of thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes in northern California, while many more are without electricity after utility providers shut off power lines to prevent sparking more fires. The company will move its corporate headquarters to the state's capital, Austin, it said Friday. It also instituted a more flexible work policy for its employees, who can choose their office location or continue to work from home. "We believe these moves best position Oracle (ORCL) for growth and provide our personnel with more flexibility about where and how they work," spokesperson Deborah Hellinger told CNN Business. "We will continue to support major hubs for Oracle around the world, including those in the United States such as Redwood Shores, Austin, Santa Monica, Seattle, Denver, Orlando and Burlington, Mass. among others, and we expect to add other locations over time." The news was first reported by Bloomberg. Oracle (ORCL) is one of Silicon Valley's oldest companies, founded in 1977 in Santa Clara and currently headquartered in nearby Redwood City. The software and cloud services provider has 135,000 employees worldwide. Oracle, which recently made headlines for its joint bid with Walmart to buy social media darling TikTok, is the latest in a spurt of big tech companies and executives shifting base to Texas. Hewlett-Packard Enterprises, a subsidiary of the company that pioneered Silicon Valley, announced last week that it would move its main office to Houston. Several smaller tech companies such as SignEasy, QuestionPro and DZS (formerly known as Dasan Zhone Solutions) have also moved from California to Texas. Silicon Valley is notorious for its exorbitant real estate prices and California has a high personal income tax rate, while Texas has none. Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced earlier this week that he had moved to Texas as well, though his companies will continue to be headquartered in California. The semiconductor firm is shifting its headquarters to a 27,715-square-foot office and research building at 2600 Great America Parkway, the San Francisco Business Times reported. Silergy will hold onto its offices at 1307 South Mary Avenue in Sunnyvale. Its new headquarters will be at Santa Clara Gateway, a multi-tenant campus owned by the Newport Beach-based real estate giant. Terms of the lease were not disclosed. Cushman & Wakefield represented Silergy in the deal. The move comes after continued growth for the semiconductor company over the past decade, according to Silergy officials. Its revenue grew to $800 million in the last fiscal year while the company has a market cap of more than $7 billion. Silergy’s new headquarters will have both offices and labs for administrative, engineering and research and development functions. “Silicon Valley is the epicenter of innovation and so it is important for our headquarters to have access to the resources and talent from around the Bay Area to take our innovation to the next level around the world,” Silergy Technology CEO Mike Grimm said in a statement. — Dana Bartholomew Read more [ad_2] Source link --- ### Early Season Wrap-up: Emerging Movers & Shakers, Current Rankings, More! - **URL:** https://moverssantaclara.com/early-season-wrap-up-emerging-movers-shakers-current-rankings-more/ - **Published:** 2024-03-24 - **Modified:** 2024-03-24 - **Author:** carlofabyss **Categories:** Blog [ad_1] With the start of Texas Tour right around the corner, that means we've officially hit the mid-way point of the 2022 DCI season. Fans have been treated to a heck of a season so far, with stand-out performances and more shows being streamed than ever before. And because we're just about halfway through the 2022 season, that means it's time to take a look at emerging movers and shakers, key matchups to keep your eye on, and the current rankings after 4 weeks of competition. Everything You Need To Know About DCI 20222022 Streaming Schedule   |   DCI 2022 At A Glance   |   2022 Production ImprovementsMovers & Shakers1. Carolina CrownWhile Crown is no stranger to the spotlight, this year in particular the Fort Mill-based corps is giving the top dogs a run for their money with their show titled Right Here, Right Now. Social media and Reddit are all clamoring with love for the fan-centered show, and based on the scores they've been receiving, the judges tend to agree (having most recently netted an impressive 86.100 at DCI Memphis on July 16th). It's been nearly ten years since Crown received their last gold medal for their 2013 program titled e=mc2, and have been keeping things competitive finishing no lower than 5th since then. You can bet that we'll be watching DCI Broken Arrow on July 19th, which is the first time we'll Crown and other East Coast corps clash with the likes of the Blue Devils and Santa Clara Vanguard for the first time this season. 2. Phantom RegimentI don't know what J.D. Shaw put it in the water over at Phantom Regiment, but whatever it was, it's working. It seems like during and after every performance the Rockford-based corps has, social media is abuzz with praise for how good the hornline sounds this year. Even after Regiment graduated a massive amount of age-outs after the 2021 Celebration season, they haven't missed a beat this season. Regiment are currently sitting 9th in the rankings based on their most recent score - only 0.6 points away from joining the 80s club and within 0.4 points of Mandarins. 3. Gold (Open Class)It's been quite a season for Gold so far! The Oceanside-based corps has been locked in a back-and-forth battle for first with Blue Devils B and Vanguard Cadets, most recently finished 2nd behind Blue Devils B by less than 0.2 points at DCI West on July 10th. The corps did hit a bit of a road bump recently, having had to perform a standstill exhibition performance at the Riverside Open on July 15th. While Gold is no stranger to success and has finished third at Open Class Finals in the last two competitive seasons, they've yet to achieve that coveted gold medal at the end of the season. Will 2022 be their year? Fans will have to keep an eye on the corps to see how they recover from their COVID protocol over the coming weeks, and if they can claw their way back... --- ### Pure Storage Subleases 330K SF In Santa Clara - **URL:** https://moverssantaclara.com/pure-storage-subleases-330k-sf-in-santa-clara/ - **Published:** 2024-03-22 - **Modified:** 2024-03-22 - **Author:** carlofabyss **Categories:** Blog [ad_1] Pure Storage has joined a Bay Area reshuffling of headquarters space by moving into larger digs. The provider of data storage devices and services is moving its corporate headquarters from Mountain View to a larger space in Santa Clara, the Silicon Valley Business Journal reported. The company inked a deal to sublease 330,000 square feet.of office space from Analog Devices in Santa Clara Square at 2555 and 2565 Augustine Dr. Terms of the lease were not disclosed. The mixed-use development, owned by the Orange County-based Irvine Company, lies southeast of the intersection of U.S. Highway 101 and Bowers Avenue, seven miles from its former headquarters. Pure, which had 1,157 employees in Silicon Valley last year, listed its 250,000-square-foot former headquarters at 650 Castro St. in Mountain View, plus several other buildings, for sublease. It plans to consolidate the company at its new Santa Clara offices, which come fully furnished and built out for occupancy. Steve Clark, Bart Lammersen and Joe Long of JLL represented Pure Storage in the deal. Todd Beatty, Kelly Yoder, Steve Horton and Carrick Young of Cushman & Wakefield represented Analog Devices. In April, Analog Devices had listed the sublease of half the space it occupied in two buildings at Santa Clara Square in a move to consolidate employees and real estate at its San Jose campus, the Business Journal reported. The Massachusetts chipmaker had eight years left on its lease, according to CBRE. Pure will assume the rest of its term. Pure Storage joins a growing list of Bay Area companies that have either upgraded or downsized their corporate offices in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, when changing work models have roiled office markets in major U.S. cities. Last month, digital real estate platform Qualia Labs listed its 39,0000-square-foot headquarters in San Francisco for sublease. Executives say it may move to Austin, Texas. The Qualia relocation also follows recent corporate moves by Ripple, Splunk, Wells Fargo, and the State Bar of California, which mostly downsized to smaller offices in favor of a hybrid office and work-from-home employee model. TaskRabbit, a worker-for-hire platform with more than 300 employees, announced last month it would be closing its San Francisco headquarters and all its physical offices to work remotely. Before the pandemic, its corporate office took up nearly 20,000 square feet over three floors. Now the IKEA-owned firm will pull up stakes from its downsized headquarters of 7,500 square feet in Rincon Hill. As in Pure Storage’s upgrade, not every company is downsizing. Finix, a payments company, just moved its headquarters into a larger office in San Francisco as other firms trim office space to work from home. The financial tech firm relocated from South Park to a century-old Art Deco building in SoMa. Thirty percent of the containers storing clients' belongings are waiting to be shipped out of state, mostly to Tennessee and Texas, Mark said. --- ### ADP report: Early draft season movers include Brock Purdy, Skyy Moore, Dalvin Cook and more - **URL:** https://moverssantaclara.com/adp-report-early-draft-season-movers-include-brock-purdy-skyy-moore-dalvin-cook-and-more/ - **Published:** 2024-03-17 - **Modified:** 2024-03-17 - **Author:** carlofabyss **Categories:** Blog [ad_1] Paying attention to where players are being drafted — looking at ADP, essentially — has become an essential tool in draft prep. But zooming in with a virtual microscope to catch the trends of the market moving may ultimately be more important. In this first edition of the ADP Report (or market movers, or stock up/stock down — whichever name you want to call it), we divided ADP up between drafts from mid-June and drafts from mid-July. Here’s all the data you need to get an early indication of who is rising and who is falling.Let’s start with who’s been moving up and down in ADPPlayers on the moveWe compared NFFC ADP from June 15 to July 15 with more recent ADP of July 16 to July 31. There’s always a chance he goes somewhere and some crazy move like the release of Leonard Fournette will allow him to get the lion’s share of the carries, but as the preseason games get closer, expect Cook’s ADP to freefall… Brock Purdy‘s big move up ADP charts comes from a series of positive reports on his return from injury. To see is to believe, but Inside Injuries’ Greg Scholz wrote back in June that Purdy was “expected to resume throwing in June, with the team hoping he’ll be ready for training camp.” There are still a few obstacles in his way — arm fatigue, compensation soreness to his shoulder and maybe oblique, Sam Darnold could still win the starting job — but if Purdy can successfully fend all those off, his ADP will likely continue to climb…. Skyy Moore was a preseason darling last year, but he has been a training camp star so far, making dazzling catches and earning compliments from his quarterback. Moore had already moved up the depth chart thanks to the departure of JuJu Smith-Schuster and now an injury to Kadarius Toney, but he seems to be responding in a fashion slightly more spectacular than we saw last season. Marquez Valdes-Scantling maybe (MAYBE) stands in his way, but if Moore continues to show rapport with Mahomes, he could emerge as a fantasy stud as the No. 1 wide receiver option in a pass-happy offense… Before his injury on Monday, Tim Patrick was rising.
